One of my favorite things to do is theme parties. I love planning events for any occasion. I just love getting ideas and bringing them together!
I received a few emails to blog about my princess 1st birthday party and I know it was about 3 months ago but the reason it took me a while to finally decide to blog about it was because I wasn't so sure I wanted to include my private life on here but after a lot of thinking I decided this might help a lot of my readers when it comes to event planing.
Event planning can take a lot of your time and can get some what stressful so be prepare to feel overwhelming at times but overall it's so much fun.
We decided to go with The Little Mermaid theme. As a lot of you know my princess name is Ariel so what better theme for her 1st birthday party! I didn't want the traditional Little Mermaid birthday party so I decided to go with a baby version Ariel and for the main colors to be purple and mint green with a little bit of gold.
I ended up celebrating her birthday twice but only because dad was on deployment when she turned 1 so we had to push her birthday party a couple of weeks back. The first celebration was just princess, brother and I. I wanted to do something special for her on that day and capture some amazing pictures which I decided to do a diy place for her to have her smash cake.
I love how everything turned out and how little money I spend on it. One of the first stores I shop at for parties is Dollar Tree. You can find so many amazing things for just $1. I love to save as much as I can just incase there is something I want to splurge on for the party. For the backdrop I used a purple table cover from Dollar Tree. All I did was tape it to an empty wall. Table covers are amazing for a great backdrop or if you're trying to cover up an ugly wall so it won't look bad at the party. I also went to Party City and picked up some very inexpensive balloons that went with the color scheme. Some other favorite stores I like to go to is Joann Fabric and Craft Store and Michael's, especially because I can use their coupons. Most of the time they have a 40% off on an item, they even sometimes have a 50% off. I love that each store has an app for its coupons because I'm that person that always forgets her coupons at home. I hate when that happens. The great thing about these stores is that you can also use each others coupons at both stores. We all know that throwing a party can get very expensive so I try to save on everything that I can.
The materials for the fabric/ribbon garland I got at Joann's and the rope is from Michael's. For the Happy Birthday banner I got the materials at Michael's and cut out two different size of shells, the lettering and put it together. Because I didn't want the traditional Little Mermaid I decided to google a baby Ariel to my liking and I was so lucky to find one that I loved!
For her outfit I used a Little Mermaid shirt that she already had. Her tutu was a gift from a friend when Ariel was born so it all went together and I didn't need to spend a dime on it.
When it came to her headband I really wanted something different but very cute so I went with a starfish. I got some glitter elastic in the $1 section of Joann and found the starfish at Michael's. I thought it looked super cute but I decided to make it a little bit more girly so I added a pearl.
I really love to bake so it only made sense to make her a smash cake too. I went for a really girly rose cake. This was her first time having cake and let me just say she didn't enjoy it. She didn't like getting dirty or the texture of the frosting on her little fingers.
To make her special day even more especial I went and got some Little Mermaid wrapping paper to give it more of a theme set up. You can definitely skip the character wrapping paper because it does tend to be a little more expensive. I found mine at Party City.
I love how everything turned out and my little princess loved it. I definitely got some amazing pictures for her album and it was very inexpensive but very time consuming, I definitely enjoyed it!
When planning her birthday party I knew I would use some of the things I used for her smash cake set up so I had some things already made. I really wanted her birthday party to be amazing and colorful. I know she's little and won't remember anything but birthday's are very special to me and I think it should always be a really special day and if you can make it amazing then why not.
For her invitations I knew I wanted something that went with her happy birthday banner so I decided to make a shell that opened. I really wanted to give the outside of the shell that real shell look so I added some cutouts to give it that feel. I picked out purple and mint green for the shells to stay with the party theme. I used the same baby Ariel I used for the banner and also added a flounder to it. I couldn't believe how cute they turned out. I was very happy with the finish product and couldn't wait to send them off to our family and friends!
For the party backdrop I used 2 mint green table covers to cover up the front of the garage door and to make it look like the sea. I also twisted some purple, white, and mint green steamers to give it that life of the sea look. I found the mint green table covers and mint green streamer at Target and the white and purple streamers at Party City. The table covers were $3.50 and the mint green streamer was $2.00. At Party City I got the streamers for under a $1 but they didn't have the mint green I wanted. The lanterns I found at Target and Michael's. The hardest part was finding the perfect mint green that all went together.
The party wouldn't be complete with some real effect under the sea!!! Bubbles!!! I had a bubble machine running and my princess loved it!
I also decided to reuse the fabric garland at her table. I added some candy and shells to her table for the kids. I made two different goodie bags for the kids.
I went with a Flounder goodie box for the boys. I cut out the box and printed Flounder's fins to glue onto the box making it look like Flounder. Inside I also included bouncing balls, a pirate patch, pirate tattoos, skull rings, party blowers, candy and other little toys for the boys.
For the girls I made an inspired Ariel goodie bag. I bought the bags on Amazon and bought the material at Joann's. I love that they were so girly and cute. Inside I included bracelets, necklaces, rings, candies, Little Mermaid tattoos, stickers and party blowers. I definitely included nothing but girly things inside!
The goodies boxes and goodie bags took so much of my time. They required a lot of detail just like the invitations which were the items that I spent most of my time making. After a while I was like "what am I getting myself into!" but in the end I'm so glad I did it!!
For the cake I decided to make a two tier white cake. I didn't want the cake to scream Little Mermaid so I went with something more settle but still went with the theme. The cake almost gave me a hard attack because I didn't make it in the comfort of my own home but I made it happened and it came out amazing!
Having the perfect outfit for your birthday is a must, even when the birthday girl can care less. I knew right away that I wanted her to wear a tutu but the hardest part was figuring out what colors, and what pattern to go with. There was just so many choices to choose from at Joann's.
After looking and looking for the perfect tulle... I finally found it! I went with purple, green mint, and the same fabric I used for the Ariel inspired goodie bags! I literally made her whole birthday outfit a day before the party. Tip to myself: don't ever do that to yourself again!! but knowing me I'll probably will!
When it can to her shell top I didn't think daddy would be on board with it but to my surprise he was!! I was so excited! For her shell top I used felt, glitter pen, and tights.
She looked super cute!
Unfortunately, I didn't get pictures of our centerpieces but they looked something like this. I got the idea from A Pumpkin and A Princess. I got the little jars from Dollar Tree for just $1. I bought the aqua rocks from Michael's and used my 50% off coupon. The Little Mermaid figures I got on Amazon.
A party wouldn't be a party without a piñata! She really enjoyed hitting it.
I was so happy how everything turned out! Thanks to my husband for helping me so much! I couldn't of done it without him! Everyone enjoyed themselves and unfortunately I couldn't get pictures of everything because I was so busy but the pictures I did captured are priceless!
I really hope this helps some of you to when it comes to planning your birthday/event parties. I love being creative and doing it yourself looks a lot better!
Next, I'm planning my son's 7th birthday party, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!!! So stay tune!!
